How SNAP Eligibility Works Across the United States

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is a federal program run by the USDA Food and Nutrition Service, but it is administered at the state level. That means while the core benefit math is the same everywhere, the gross income ceiling, the asset test, and certain deductions can differ from state to state through a mechanism called Broad-Based Categorical Eligibility (BBCE). As of 2026, approximately 42 million Americans receive SNAP benefits each month, with the average benefit around $211 per person.

Every state calculator on this directory uses the 2026 USDA Thrifty Food Plan and the state-specific BBCE rules in effect as of October 1, 2025. The gross income limit is 130% of the federal poverty level for states without BBCE, and 200% of FPL for states that have adopted BBCE for households without elderly or disabled members. Net income after deductions must be at or below 100% of FPL. The maximum monthly benefit for a one-person household is $292 in the contiguous 48 states and DC, with higher amounts in Alaska and Hawaii to account for higher food costs.
