Our Mission

Food Stamp Eligibility Calculator was created with a simple but powerful mission: to make SNAP benefits information accessible, easy to understand, and available to every American who needs it. We believe that access to nutritious food is a fundamental human need, and that understanding government assistance programs should not require navigating complex government websites or deciphering pages of legal jargon.

Our free online tool helps families and individuals quickly estimate their potential food stamp benefits so they can make informed decisions about applying for assistance. We are committed to removing the confusion and intimidation that often prevents eligible people from seeking the help they need and deserve.

Every decision we make — from the design of the calculator to the topics we cover in our blog to the way we cite our sources — is driven by this mission. We measure our success not by ad impressions or page views, but by the number of people who use the calculator and decide to apply for benefits they are entitled to.

What We Do

We provide a comprehensive, free SNAP eligibility calculator that uses the latest USDA income guidelines and benefit tables to estimate whether a household may qualify for food stamp benefits and approximately how much they might receive. Our calculator takes into account a wide range of factors that affect eligibility, including:

  • Household size — The number of people living and eating together in your home
  • State of residence — Each state has different income thresholds and benefit calculations
  • Gross and net monthly income — Both earned and unearned income sources
  • Employment status — Including work requirements for able-bodied adults
  • Dependent care costs — Childcare expenses that may be deducted from income
  • Medical expenses — Especially for elderly or disabled household members
  • Child support payments — Legally obligated payments that reduce countable income
  • Shelter and utility costs — Rent, mortgage, property taxes, and utility allowances

All calculations are performed entirely within your browser, ensuring that your personal and financial information remains completely private. We never collect, store, or transmit any data you enter into our calculator. This is a deliberate design choice — we believe people checking whether they qualify for food assistance should not have to surrender their financial privacy to use a free tool.

Our Story

Food Stamp Eligibility Calculator was founded by Wasim Akram, who saw firsthand how difficult it was for ordinary people to understand whether they qualified for food assistance. Friends and family would ask him questions: "Do I make too much to qualify?" "How much would I get if I applied?" "Will this affect my immigration status?" The official government resources were comprehensive but hard to navigate; the existing third-party tools were either paywalled, ad-heavy, or required users to submit personal information.

Wasim built the first version of the calculator in early 2024 as a side project, with three design principles:

  1. Free forever — no paywall, no account required, no email gate
  2. Privacy by design — all calculations run in the browser; no personal data is collected
  3. Sourced to primary documents — every figure traceable to the federal regulation or USDA notice that defines it

The Site grew organically. Readers found it useful, shared it with friends, and emailed Wasim with questions and corrections. State-specific guides were added one at a time, each researched from the state's own SNAP policy manual. By 2026, the Site covered all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. territories, with a regularly updated blog explaining SNAP rules in plain English.

Our Values

Accuracy & Trust

We strive to provide the most accurate information based on official USDA guidelines and state-specific SNAP policies. Our calculator algorithms and educational content are regularly reviewed and updated to reflect the latest changes in federal and state regulations. Every dollar figure on the Site is cited to a primary government source, and every page displays a "Last updated" date so you can judge how current the information is. When we make an error, we correct it visibly and promptly — see our Editorial Policy for details.

Privacy & Security

Your privacy is not an afterthought — it is built into the architecture of the Site. The calculator runs entirely in your browser. The numbers you enter never leave your device. We do not collect your name, address, Social Security Number, or any financial information. Our server logs are minimal and retained for only 30 days. Read our full Privacy Policy for details.

Accessibility & Ease of Use

We designed the calculator and the Site to be usable by anyone, regardless of technical skill, device, or internet connection. The calculator works on mobile phones, tablets, and desktop computers. It works on slow connections and even offline (once the page is loaded). The page is designed to meet WCAG 2.1 AA accessibility standards, with readable typography, sufficient color contrast, and keyboard-navigable forms.

Transparency

We publish our methodology, our sources, and our editorial policy in full. We do not have hidden formulas or secret data sources. The calculator's calculation logic is visible in the page's JavaScript source code, viewable in any browser's developer tools. If you disagree with how we calculate something, you can see exactly what we did and why.

Independence

We are not affiliated with any government agency, nonprofit, law firm, or benefits-counseling service. Our advertising relationships do not influence our editorial content. We do not accept sponsored articles or paid placements. See our Disclaimer for more about our independence.

How We Make Money

The Site is supported entirely by advertising revenue. We display ads through Google AdSense and potentially other ad networks. Advertisements appear in designated ad slots — header, sidebar, and in-article positions — never as part of the article body or calculator interface.

We do not:

  • Charge users to access the calculator or any content
  • Sell user data to advertisers or data brokers
  • Accept payment from government agencies, nonprofits, or law firms for favorable coverage
  • Participate in affiliate marketing programs that pay us for referrals to SNAP-application services

If we ever change this model, we will update this page and our Disclaimer to reflect the change.

What We Are Not

We want to be transparent about the limits of what we offer:

  • We are not a government agency. We are not affiliated with USDA, FNS, or any state SNAP office. The official SNAP portal is at fns.usda.gov/snap.
  • We are not lawyers or benefits counselors. We do not hold social work licensure, attorney licensure, or SNAP outreach certification. We cannot give you individual legal or financial advice. See our Disclaimer.
  • We cannot submit a SNAP application for you. To apply for SNAP, you must submit an application through your state's SNAP agency. We can point you to the right place, but we cannot file paperwork on your behalf.
  • We cannot guarantee you will be approved. Our calculator produces an estimate based on the inputs you provide. The actual eligibility determination is made by a state caseworker who reviews your documentation and conducts an interview.

Get In Touch

We answer every email personally — usually within 1–2 business days. Whether you have a question about the calculator, a correction to a number, a suggestion for a new article topic, or just want to share that the Site helped you, we want to hear from you.
